The areca palm tree has been a part of the Konkan landscape for centuries. Its leaves were traditionally used for various purposes, including roofing, thatching, and weaving mats. However, the practice of crafting plates from areca leaves is a relatively recent innovation.
It all started with a problem. Local communities in Konkan struggled with the increasing use of plastic and thermocol plates, which were polluting the environment and harming wildlife. Recognizing the need for a sustainable alternative, local artisans began experimenting with areca leaves. They discovered that these leaves could be easily moulded into sturdy and leakproof products such as plates, bowls, trays perfect for everyday use.
This innovation quickly gained popularity, becoming a vital source of income for local communities. Today, areca plates are an essential part of Konkan’s cultural heritage and a symbol of its commitment to sustainability.
